How to fill you garden planter boxes

Posted on July 25, 2014 at 1:25 pm

Start by protecting the box itself, if you are worried about rodents and other pests getting into your plants, start by applying chicken wire to the underside and even around the sides.
You’ll then need to make sure the soil is right, really you should use bout 1/4 of the soil from your garden and the other ¾ an equal mix of sand and compost to make sure you have nutrient loaded but quick-draining soil. If you can, check the pH level to make sure it isn’t too alkaline or acidic before planting anything. If you’re unsure about compost visit our previous note: Different types of Compost.
Once you’ve got the soil right you can start planting your plants, whether you are growing fruit or vegetable or just sticking to plants, the choice is yours.
Another benefit of these planters is that if the plants in the box become diseased, you can simply empty it out, change the soil and start fresh. Unlike in-ground gardening.

Garden planter boxes – the benefits

Posted on July 18, 2014 at 1:25 pm

Garden planter boxes are great for the garden for many reasons:

  • They are a neat and tidy way to arrange your garden
  • If you have poor soil for the plants you want to grow, whether the clay level is too high, or there is too much sand or stones.
  • You can arrange plants into different boxes and control their growth more easily.
  • Being raised off the ground can help disabled gardeners, or just people who struggle with low positions.
  • You can choose many different types to give your garden a different style.
  • They come in mobile and immobile. Mobile boxes will give you flexibility to give your plants as much sun as they need! You can also bring them inside should you have a particular harsh winter.
  • You’ll also be able to protect your plants from pests like rodents by putting protective wire underneath, up the sides or even over the top of your boxes.

All you need to know regarding up and over timber doors

Posted on July 10, 2014 at 3:33 pm

There are different sizes and styles of up and over timber doors in the market today. Mainstream manufacturers also specialise in custom-made doors which can fit your purpose but are only made to run a maximum size of 16 feet wide and 8 feet high. A professional manufacturer can achieve any design which is physically possible using timber, inclusive of various drawings. For a deeper understanding of these doors, this article explores everything that is worth knowing.

Operating mechanisms

Up and over timber doors have two main operating mechanisms. A retractable opening mechanism is very popular because of the weight-control requirements and besides, the need to automate these doors for remote control makes it the most ideal mechanism. It is highly recommended for garage doors because they open along horizontal tracks in the garage and provide a high degree of security.

A canopy operating mechanism on the other hand does not have any horizontal tracks protruding into the opening space. As the door opens, it forms a canopy with approximately one third of the entire door outside the building.

Construction

These doors are mostly constructed in two distinct ways. One makes use of a steel box section which is essentially a steel sub frame chassis to which you connect the timber. The other strategy makes use of timber alone. The entire door panel is constructed using traditional joiner methods.

The first method using a steel sub chassis offers a lot of flexibility in terms of size. It can accommodate heavier hardwood materials because the timber used must not necessarily be of the structural size. Overall strength of such a door comes from the steel chassis. Incorporation of the steel box section assures the user of more security when the door is closed.

Finishes

A good number of these doors will appear with a high-quality, factory-applied woodstain finish but in a vast variety of modern and traditional colours. When treated correctly, these doors can serve you for years without a refresh of the stain. This makes timber doors very cheap to maintain just like steel and GRP doors that most people prefer.

Sizes

Any up and over one-piece door will be limited by weight as the size increases. Generally, the accepted width is 16 feet. With this maximum width, you will also be limited to two systems; a timber sectional or a timber round the corner door system. The most sensible height is 8 feet, but this can as well be limited by the weight of the door.

With a qualified local joiner, it is possible to design and have your door built locally. However, there is need for a balanced mechanism which oftentimes goes unmentioned. If the door will be electrically operated, there are minimum safety requirements which must be met. This makes it a little difficult for a local joiner to design and finish such a door for you, a reason why you should purchase up and over timber doors from a qualified manufacturer. This will also give an opportunity for custom-made designs if there are specific details that you need.

Division

Posted on June 30, 2014 at 7:47 pm

When it comes to gardening, creating divisions will help create a beautifully landscaped feel. Take advantage of different types of floor coverings including: grass, woodchip, pebbles (you can find many different sizes and colours to suit your needs) paving, decking or even concrete! Water features, can be anything from a small fountain, a manmade or natural stream or even a pond, all of which can be a beautiful break in the landscape of your garden. Being clever with planting can create illusions, from raised plant boxes and beds to just purchasing plants of varying heights. Another important consideration when creating a garden design is the furniture you plan to have in it, especially when you are picking permanent features. This decision will vary greatly dependent on your needs and also the size of your garden and budget. Lastly, an aspect many people don’t think about is lighting. This is something to consider especially if you like enjoying long summers nights outdoors. Outdoor friendly fairy lights can add a beautiful touch to any garden, but you may want something more practical to follow a path.

Low maintenance

Posted on June 13, 2014 at 10:43 pm

Wanting a low maintenance garden? There are several aspects you need to consider. To keep your garden looking nice all year round you’re going to want to pick plants that will retain their colour. something like a bamboo is a good choice, but if you want some other colours you may want to pick a verbena. It won’t be around all year, but it will come back every year!

Divide the space in your garden to break away from the classic squares and rectangles. Keep your design simple, but have different materials and hard landscaping in different colours. Breaking it up with low maintenance plants and see through plants like the verbena will help and colour, shade and texture to your garden whilst keeping the space feeling open. By varying the heights of plants to include a mix of ground covering and tall plants you will be able to create the illusion of a fuller garden, without having to put the time and effort into it.
