2. Gather the necessary materials, such as lumber planks and nails, to build the frame. Make sure you use pressure-treated wood that is safe for growing edibles.

3. Assemble the frame of your raised bed with the planks and nails. Use landscape fabric on the inside walls of your bed to prevent weeds from growing.

4. Fill the frame with a mix of soil, compost, and other organic matter. Make sure your soil is well-drained yet holds moisture in order for plants to thrive.

5. Add some mulch or wood chips around the base of the raised bed to help retain moisture and keep weeds down.

6. Plant your desired plants in the raised bed and water them regularly.

Decking boards

When it comes to decking boards, there are a few materials worth considering. Wood decking boards offer durability and strength while also providing a beautiful natural aesthetic. Pressure-treated wood decking is an especially good choice if you’re looking for long-term deck performance, as it can stand up to the elements better than other types of wood decking. Composite decking boards are another great option for those who want a low-maintenance deck that won’t require refinishing or staining every season. They come in a variety of colors and styles and are resistant to rot, decay, fading, and insects. Finally, PVC decking boards provide excellent slip resistance and longevity with minimal maintenance required—just some occasional cleaning is all that’s needed to keep your deck looking great. No matter which board material you choose, it’s important to make sure the deck is properly sealed and waterproofed for optimal performance and longevity. With these materials in mind, you can find the perfect decking boards for your outdoor space.

What wood is best for deck boards?

When it comes to deck boards, there are a range of different types of wood available. The best option for deck boards will depend on the climate and environment that you live in as well as your budget and aesthetic preferences. Common woods include cedar, redwood, ipe, ipê, mahogany, teak, pressure-treated pine and composite plastic decking.

Cedar is an excellent choice for decks due to its resistance to rot and insects. It is lightweight and easy to work with but can be expensive depending on where you purchase it from. Redwood is also resistant to rot and insects but tends to be more expensive than cedar. Ipe and ipê decking are some of the most durable woods available and can last up to 50 years with proper care. Mahogany deck boards are also durable but may need to be treated occasionally to protect them against weathering and splintering. Teak deck boards are stylish and luxurious but can be expensive. Pressure-treated pine deck boards are very affordable and resistant to rot, making them a popular choice for projects. Lastly, composite plastic decking is made from recycled materials and is low-maintenance but usually more expensive than other deck board options.

Making sure your garden is nature friendly

Posted on November 1, 2022 at 5:50 pm

Although you may want to make sure your garden look exactly how you want it you should also think carefully about the environmental impact it is having and whether you could do anything to help the local wildlife.

Lots of people like to keep their grass lawns cut fairly short so that it looks neat and tidy, or even replacing their turf with artificial grass, however egg-laying insects, such as butterflies, actually require longer grass to be able to lay their eggs.

Replacing your fencing or walls with hedgerows can not only look more appealing but can be a lot more wildlife friendly as hedges provide birds a place to nest, hedgehogs a place to hide and small mammals shelter from bigger predators.

If you are considering have a bird table, then make sure that it is secure and that you do not have too many cats come into your garden as this could be a recipe for disaster.

With a little bit of research and consideration you can easily make your garden a relaxing enjoyable place for you, your family and friends to spend time in and also a perfect home for local wildlife and nature to enjoy too.

Give your garden the TLC they deserve

Posted on May 18, 2022 at 3:22 pm

We all love to see flowering plants in our gardens throughout the year and especially so in the summer months but without a bit of attention they can quickly become unkempt or even fail to thrive. Although regular watering is essential there are other action we can take to ensure our plants bloom throughout the season and beyond.

Before the plants are even planted it is important to make sure the compost is of good quality and even enriched to give the plants a good start. Some plants grow better in certain types of compost so do a bit of research to check that you are giving the plant the right compost providing the nutrients it needs.

Once your flower bed or planters are ready for the plants you will need to decide which plants to put where taking into consideration how big they will grow. A plant that is cramped for space will not grow as well as one that has plenty of space.

As the plants grow and flower it is a good idea to feed them once a week with a plant feed taking care to water the soil not the leaves. Dead-heading flowers that have wilted will encourage new blooms to grow and should keep the plant flowering for longer.

Do you have the right tools for the job?

Posted on February 7, 2022 at 10:41 pm

Even if you are not a really keen gardener it is important that you have the right tools for the job. You may not have a shed full of gardening equipment and you may not need it, but you do need to have the basic to keep on top of and maintain your garden area. Depending on what you have in your garden you are mostly likely to need a mower, spade, trowel, rake, fork, outdoor broom and possibly a hoe. Mowing the lawns is often one of the easiest jobs and can make a real difference to the look of the whole garden but you do usually need to do a bit more than that if you really want to keep on top of it. One of the most common jobs that needs doing, that lots of people despise is weeding. This may be a flower bed, border or patio where weeds are coming up through the path. You may even find that you have weeds coming up through your grass from time to time. You may need a small hand held fork and trowel to get the weeds up and for the crack in between the patio, sometimes a butter knife is the best option.
